HANOI, 27 August 2014: Vietnamese Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang held talks with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, last week, that focused on creating favourable conditions to add more airline services from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to points in Cambodia.
Local TV channels confirmed that the two sides agreed to create favourable conditions for Vietnamese and Cambodian airlines to open new air routes between the two countries.
Vietnam Airlines will consider opening a Phu Quoc Island – Siem Reap route, while VietJet Air plans Hanoi/HCMC– Siem Reap and HCMC – Phnom Penh services.
Prior to the meeting in Cambodia, Vietnam also reached an agreement with Laos on the opening of a direct air route between Hanoi and HCMC over Lao airspace that will cut flight times beteeen the two cities and save fuel.
However, there are other considerations such as air traffic control standards that may hinder implementation in the short-term.
Lao PDR, Vietnam and Cambodia agreed some time back to an almost open skies policy that allows airlines with a home-base in any of the three countries almost complete freedom to operate flights between major towns.
