The temple of Preah Khan was built by King Jayavarman VII to honor his father and is located North-West of the Angkor Thom. The temple houses a number of cravings related to the Hindu mythology and Buddhist motifs are also present. The temple has been left largely unrestored, and nature has reclaimed most of the structures becoming one with the temples. The temple is built on the site of King Jayavarman VII’s victory over the Chams in 1191, and the name translates to mean ‘holy sword’ or ‘sacred sword.’ The temple is dedicated to the King’s father and houses the main image of ‘bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.’ The 5 sq. km temple city had multiple functions of being a University, a temple, and a city with almost 100,000 inhabitants.
