Speaking during his meeting with nearly 7,000 workers in Pursat province on Friday, Mr Hun Sen said that last year’s celebration was disrupted due to Cambodia’s hosting of the ASEAN Summit and related summits.
“Last year, we missed the opportunity to celebrate the Water Festival, as some people thought that the Royal Government lacked money to celebrate the occasion, however, last year we were busy hosting the ASEAN Summit, and it was our responsibility to welcome those countries’representatives to Cambodia,” he said.
Chhin Ketna, Permanent Vice-President and Secretary-General of the National Committee for Organising National and International Festivals, said yesterday that Cambodia missed the Water Festival for three years from 2020 to 2022.
After the government’s announcement on the Water Festival and the 70th National Independence Day, the National Committee for National and International Festivals is ready to hold meetings with stakeholders to celebrate these national events which attract more tourists, he added.
“I expect that this year’s Water Festival and Independence Day will receive a lot of support from the people in the provinces and international tourists, as this year the government has announced a ‘grand celebration’ compared to previous years,” Ketna said.
Sdeoung Chandy, 38, a drinks vendor in front of the Royal Palace said yesterday, she was very happy that the government has announced the resumption of the Water Festival in Phnom Penh after an absence of three years.
During the Water Festival celebration, it is a good time for her and other vendors, as they can earn good income from selling drinks and souvenirs to national and international tourists, she added.
Chandy also said that the City Hall should organise the event by adorning the streets with decorations, coloured lights, hold a firework display and provide areas to hold concerts.
This year, it will attract many people to visit the city, especially for the boat racing, she said.
The 70th National Independence Day will be held on November 9, while the Water Festival, will take place from November 26 to 28 this year.
