“The top ten foreign tourist arrivals in Cambodia are from Thailand, Vietnam, China, Lao PDR, US, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, and Russia,” Top Sopheak, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Tourism, told Khmer Times.
Cambodia received 144,284 travellers from Thailand in the first six months of this year, up 121 percent from 65,545 tourists for the same period in 2022.
Around 85,822 tourists from Vietnam visited Cambodia till June this year, up 134.4 percent from 36,611 travellers for the same month in the previous year.
The number of tourists from China surged 387.8 percent to 40,383, from 8,279 travellers.
Some places that attracted the most tourists last month were Phnom Penh, Siem Reap Angkor, Costal zone, Preah Sihanouk, Eco-tourism zone, etc.
The capital welcomed 115,006 foreign visitors in June 2023, up 43.8 percent from 79,982 travelers for the same month last year. Similarly, Phnom Penh received 144,767 domestic tourists, up 143.6 percent from 59,434 visitors for the same period in 2022.
While the number of foreign visitors to Angkor surged 179.8 percent to 41,012, the number of domestic tourists fell 24.2 percent to 64,418.
Meanwhile, a VNA report said Vietnam is looking to attract high-end tourists from Cambodia.
Vietnam has been witnessing an increase in the number of tourists from Cambodia, especially to the border areas during the weekend.
Tran Quoc Thinh, director of Tay Ninh province’s Tourism Promotion Centre, told VNA that Cambodian tourists primarily arrive through border gates due to the low travel costs and convenient bus services.
The frequency of flights between Cambodia and Vietnamese tourism destinations is currently limited and not fully utilised by many airlines. Tourism products for Cambodian visitors need to
be diversified further. Furthermore, promotion and marketing efforts targeted at the Cambodian market remain limited, the report pointed out.
To address these challenges and attract more Cambodian tourists, Thinh said promotion programmes had been organised in Tay Ninh province, it added.
Earlier this month, Tourism Minister Thong Khon said Cambodia received around 2.57 million international visitors in the first half of 2023, a remarkable increase of 409 percent from 506,762 from the corresponding period in 2022.
“About 910,000 foreign tourists visited Cambodia by air, up 279 percent; 1.63 million by land, up 526 percent; and 30,000 by waterways, up 586 percent,” he said.
Cambodia is projected to receive around five million international tourists this year, an increase of 120 percent from 2.27 million travellers in 2022, the minister observed.
Meanwhile, Asian Development Bank’s Asian Development Outlook in April 2023 said that Cambodia’s growth is projected to accelerate this year and, next, due to the continued tourism recovery.
“Strong export growth and tourism recovery accelerated growth in 2022 and shrank the current account deficit,” it said.
