Phnom Penh, March 30th, 2023 —

See Tonle Sap, Cambodia’s largest lake lying just south of Siem Reap. Visit one of the island’s famous floating villages, Kompong Phluk, and experience local life while exploring the stilted houses, fisheries, and floating hospital.

Kampong Phluk Floating Village, located at 16 km at north-south of Siem Reap. The villages are primarily Khmer and have about 3000 inhabitants between them. Flooded mangrove forest surrounds the area and is home to a variety of wildlife including crab-eating macaques.

During the dry season when the lake is low (March – July), the buildings in the villages seem to soar atop their 6-meter stilts exposed by the lack of water.

At this time of year many of the villagers move out onto the lake and build temporary houses. In the wet season when water level rises (Aug – February), the villagers move back to their permanent houses on the floodplain, the stilts now hidden under the water. Kampong Phluk’s economy is, as one might expect, based in fishing, primary in shrimp harvesting.

When visitors arrived Kampong Phluk Floating Village, They may unwind and take in the natural beauty while also getting a glimpse into the everyday routines of the more than 911 families, most of whom reside nearby. They are reliant on shrimp harvesting.
