The Kingdom of Cambodia was ranked 13th in terms of peacefulness in the Asia-Pacific Region, and 73rd among 163 countries around the world, according to the 2023 Global Peace Index released yesterday by the Sydney-based Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
“This demonstrates the tremendous progress our Cambodian people have made under the wise leadership of Samdech Techo (Prime Minister Hun Sen)!” said H.E. Khieu Kanharith, Minister of Information in a Facebook post this morning.
This is the 17th edition of the Global Peace Index, which ranks 163 independent states and territories comprising 99.7 percent of the world’s population, using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources, and measures the state of peace across three domains: the level of Societal Safety and Security; the extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict; and the degree of Militarisation.
The findings show that the average level of country peacefulness deteriorated by 0.42 percent in the 2023 Global Peace Index. This is the ninth consecutive year that global peacefulness has deteriorated. The average level of peacefulness has only improved twice year-on-year since 2008.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its consequences were the main drivers of the deterioration in peacefulness globally. Both Russia and Ukraine are now ranked amongst the ten least peaceful countries, and Ukraine had the largest deterioration of any country in the 2023 Global Peace Index.
Iceland has secured its top place as the most peaceful country in the world since the study was first released in 2008, followed by Denmark and Ireland, while Afghanistan is the least peaceful country.
