The technical team of the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology is restoring and strengthening the stairs at the Eastern Entrance of Angkor Wat to raise the value of this ancient structure, said the APSARA National Authority’s news release this afternoon.

Archaeologist Phin Vicheasachara said that the restoration work was aimed at strengthening the stairs due to the sandstone condition of the stairs at the Eastern Entrance of Angkor Wat. Some are about to fall, and the team will prepare to push the stones back to their original position to strengthen the pillars to be strong again.

Ms. Phin Vicheasachara added that age and nature are the factors, which caused the foundation structure to deteriorate.

According to the archeologist, the working team studies the layout of the entrance structure and registers numbers as well as finds the missing stones, and assembles the stones to know from what part of the structure they come from. After assembling the shape, the team will study the foundation, whether it should be repaired or should be strengthened to put it back in its original place or not. In addition, the team is putting support to the central roof to prevent it from falling. AKP
