Cambodian nationals now constitute the largest growing segment of the Vietnam tourism market, according to Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

With an increase of 338 percent during the first half of the current year, Cambodian tourists recorded the largest growth among global tourist arrivals during the country’s significant post-pandemic recovery period.

Cambodian tourists were closely followed by Indian tourists, which grew by 236 percent. Laos stood third in terms of growth in tourism source (117 percent), followed by Thailand (108 percent) and Singapore (107 percent).

Vietnam’s tourism offerings include visa-free stay up to one month for citizens of Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia and Laos, which has made it a great attraction among tourists originating from Southeast Asia.

The administration attributes the rise in tourists from India to the increase in the number of direct flights between Indian cities and Vietnam.

Tourists from China, the biggest tourism source for Vietnam before the pandemic, increased by 22 percent following the Chinese government’s decision to resume group tours to Vietnam two months ago. In the first half of the current year, Vietnam received more than 5.5 million visitors, 69 percent of this year’s eight-million target.

South Korea sent the highest number of visitors to Vietnam with more than 1.6 million arrivals, accounting for 28 percent of the total. China ranked second with 557,000, followed by the United States with 374,000.

The central beach city of Da Nang, the ancient town of Hoi An, Da Lat – the city of thousand flowers in the Central Highlands region, Nha Trang, Vung Tau and the “Paradise Pearl Island” of Phu Quoc are some of the top favourite Vietnamese destinations among Cambodian tourists.

Many Cambodians also regularly visit Vietnam for medical purposes.

Speaking to Khmer Times, a manager in-charge of an outbound department with a leading tours
and travel company in Phnom Penh, said Vietnam has always been the number one destination for Cambodians.

“We, in Cambodia, generally talk of inbound tourism while taking a myopic view towards outbound tourism. I have been working in the travel industry for over 20 years now and I can tell you that Cambodians are great travellers. And if you take the young generation, they are compulsory travellers.

“Of course, outbound tourism hit its low during the pandemic and now it is recovering. More and
more Cambodians will continue to explore the world while receiving tourists from across the world here with highest standards of hospitality.”

He said Vietnam and Thailand have been the major travel destinations for Cambodians, which is now becoming more diversified with more travel options and increasing connectivity.
