PHNOM PENH, 8 November 2016: Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism is pressing city authorities to ban vehicles at Sisowath Quay, a historic riverside venue in the capital city that attracts tourists.
Khmer Times reported the ministry wants a ban enforced on a stretch of Sisowath Quay, which overlooks the Tonlé Sap River, near Wat Phnom to the Royal Palace on weekends claiming it would boost tourism.
Tourism Minister, Thong Khon, was quoted saying the request had been submitted to Phnom Penh City Hall.
The minister also asked that parasols and food carts be placed along the closed-off stretch to serve visiting tourists.
If the city agrees, vehicles will be banned the boulevard road on Saturdays and Sundays only.
Similar arrangements could be introduced in Sihanoukville and in Siem Reap City where sections of popular roads where tourists congregate could be turned into walking streets in the evening, or at weekends.
Sisowath Quay is a historic riverside located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, parallel to Sisowath Boulevard in the Chamkarmon district.
The portion in front of the palace was used for watching boat races during the Water Festival earlier this year. The Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Cambodia is located in this district a popular dining spot for expatriates and visitors.
