Ajman to build $571mn airport

heikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman, on Sunday approved the final plans and designs for the AED2.1 billion ($571 million) new Ajman International Airport project.

The Crown Prince reviewed the plans of the airport which is being constructed in the Al Manama area of the emirate, reported news agency WAM.

The plan includes arrival and departure lounges, hangars and cargo handling, WAM said.

Speaking on the occasion, Sheikh Ammar said he was impressed by the interior and exterior designs of the airport, which will launch in 2018
He added that the project will be eco-friendly, in support of Ajman Vision 2021, and will support the emirate’s future plans to boost its economy and tourism.

The UAE’s smallest emirate, Ajman is allocating 40 percent of its 2014 budget to increase work on new development, economic and social projects.

Ajman International Airport is expected to handle around one million passengers a year when it is eventually completed. The project was launched in 2008 but stalled as a result of the economic downturn. However tenders for construction of the airport were reportedly issued earlier this year.
