UAE to protect its heritage

The UAE is drafting a new law aimed at preserving and protecting its national heritage as part of the UAE Vision 2021 initiative.

Mohammed Khamis Al Muhairi, director-general at National Council of Tourism and Antiquities, said in comments published by news agency WAM that the National Antiquities Protection Law will be issued by the Cabinet.

He added that the law would preserve the heritage rights of current and next generations, adding that it calls for protection, face-lifting and banning the exportation of antiquities without a licence from authorities.

Al Muhairi admitted that there had been a delay in the issuance of this law, attributing it to the “unique nature of the archaeological work” needed to enact such laws.
